Reading the history of food is tantalizing (and calorie-free): which foods were available, given as gifts, eaten for health or comfort, etc.. (I found it noteworthy myself to learn a few months ago that Virginia Woolf may have been one of the earliest modern writers to write about the actual food served at a lunch she attended.)
